How We Rank Restaurant Software

We exist to help restaurant operators choose the right tools — not to sell the highest bidder. This page explains exactly how our rankings are decided, where our data comes from, and how we make money so you can judge our independence for yourself.

Our evaluation criteria

Every solution gets an editorial score from 0 to 5, computed from a fixed, weighted rubric so the number means the same thing for every tool. Category pages (for example recipe costing) are sorted by this score, highest first. "Best for" pages (for example bars) are ordered by an objective fit score for that operator type, with the editorial score used only to break ties.

The editorial score is the weighted average of five criteria, each scored 0–5, then rounded to one decimal:

  • 25%Feature depth vs. its category — does the tool actually solve the job (inventory, recipe costing, AP automation, waste, procurement, analytics) for the segment it targets?
  • 20%Integration breadth — POS, accounting, and supplier connections that determine real-world usefulness.
  • 20%Pricing transparency & value — is pricing published, and is it fair relative to capability? A free tier or trial helps here.
  • 15%Segment-fit clarity — is it clear who the tool is and isn't for (independents, multi-unit, bars, catering, ghost kitchens, enterprise)?
  • 20%Independent reputation — anchored to verified third-party review scores (G2, Capterra) where they exist; otherwise judged from documented adoption. We never invent a number.

The rating you see: editorial score + sourced reviews

Our headline rating is the editorial score above — fully owned by us and applied identically to every tool, including our own sponsor. Alongside it, wherever a tool has a presence on independent review platforms, we show the aggregate third-party rating (for example G2 or Capterra) with the source named, a link to it, and the number of reviews it reflects. You see both the judgment we stand behind and the raw crowd signal it's checked against.

  • Every listing shows a "Last verified" date so you know how fresh the pricing and facts are.
  • If we can't independently confirm a fact — a price, a rating, a review count — we mark it unverified rather than guess.
  • Third-party scores are shown with attribution and a link back to the source; we don't copy or rehost their reviews.

Data sources

Our profiles and ratings are compiled from a mix of:

  • Vendor documentation, pricing pages, and product demos.
  • Public review platforms (e.g. G2, Capterra, app stores) for ratings and review counts.
  • Hands-on testing and operator interviews where available.
  • Community upvotes and verified-user feedback collected on this site.

Pricing changes frequently; we update figures regularly but always confirm the current price with the vendor before you buy.

Review & independence policy

  • Rankings are driven by the objective signals above. No vendor can pay to rank higher, and our code never forces any partner to the #1 spot.
  • Affiliate or sponsor relationships do not influence a tool's position in any ranked list. Sponsored placements are always visibly labeled as "Partner" or "Sponsored".
  • We update listings as products, pricing, and reviews change, and we welcome corrections from vendors and operators alike.

How we make money & the Culistock relationship

This site is free to use. We earn referral commissions when you request a demo or sign up through some of our partner links, at no extra cost to you. Those commissions fund our research and keep the directory free — but, as above, they never buy a better ranking.

Culistock disclosure. Culistock is a sponsor/partner of this site, and it is also listed in the directory as a restaurant operations platform. To keep things honest:

  • Culistock is scored by the same objective rules as every other tool — it is never hand-placed at #1.
  • Wherever Culistock appears in a ranked list it carries a visible "Partner" label (and, where relevant, a "Best for independents" note).
  • It only surfaces on a "best for" page when it genuinely fits that operator type; for example it does not lead recommendations for large enterprise chains.
